Andrew Petter, past dean of the University of Victoria faculty of law and former British Columbia attorney general, was named president and vice-chancellor of Simon Fraser University. He takes up his new post Sept. 1. Professor Petter, who said he considers himself foremost an academic, told the Times-Colonist newspaper his detour into politics was never meant to be permanent. “I saw it as a form of public service.” Professor Petter spent 10 years as an MLA, from 1991 to 2000, and served in several key cabinet posts in the NDP government, including minister of aboriginal affairs, minister of health, minister of advanced education and attorney general. As UVic’s dean of law from 2002 to 2008, Professor Petter oversaw the establishment of a new graduate law program and undertook several aboriginal initiatives such as the creation of a National Aboriginal Economic Development Chair and the development of the Akitsiraq Law School in Nunavut.
