Hargurdeep (Deep) Saini

Beginning July 1, Hargurdeep (Deep) Saini will be the new vice-president and principal of the University of Toronto Mississauga. Dr. Saini, a plant biologist, comes to U of T from the University of Waterloo, where he has served as dean of the faculty of environment since 2006.

Kelley Castle

Kelley Castle was appointed dean of students at Victoria University, federated with the University of Toronto. The appointment took effect Feb. 15. Ms. Castle had been serving as dean of students at the University of Trinity College, also federated with U of T, since 2004.

Bruce Condie

Bruce Condie is Vancouver Island University’s new director, international marketing, recruitment and business development, effective Feb. 22. Mr. Condie comes to the university from Red River College in Winnipeg, where he had been director of international education since 2006.

Michael J. Strong

The University of Western Ontario appointed Michael J. Strong dean of the Schulich School of Medicine and Dentistry. Dr. Strong will begin his term on July 1. He is currently chief of neurology and co-chair of the department of clinical neurological sciences at the London Health Sciences Centre and UWO.

David Marasco

David Marasco was appointed university registrar at Algoma University in early February. Mr. Marasco has worked in the university’s office of the registrar for 10 years as associate registrar and most recently as acting registrar.

Faye Mishna

The University of Toronto appointed Faye Mishna dean of the Factor-Inwentash faculty of social work for a five-year term that began Feb. 1. Dr. Mishna, who was named to the Margaret and Wallace McCain Family Chair in Child and Family in 2005, was serving as interim dean of the faculty.

Ulrich Scheck

Thompson Rivers University appointed Ulrich Scheck provost and vice-president academic, effective Jan. 15. Previously, he was serving a dual role as dean of arts and associate vice-president, academic. He joined the university as dean of arts in 2005.

Kathryn Elton

Kathryn Elton was appointed assistant vice-president, development, at Wilfrid Laurier University, starting March 8. Previously, Ms. Elton was executive director of advancement, life and physical sciences at the University of Guelph.

Vladimir Spicanovic

The Ontario College of Art & Design appointed Vladimir Spicanovic dean, faculty of art. Now in his eighth year at OCAD, Dr. Spicanovic has held a variety of positions including assistant dean, associate dean and most recently acting dean in the faculty of art.

Lesley Cormack

Lesley Cormack was appointed dean of the University of Alberta’s faculty of arts. Dr. Cormack is currently dean of the faculty of arts and social sciences at Simon Fraser University, a position she’s held since 2007. Her five-year term at U of A begins July 1.

Scott Nicoll

Kwantlen Polytechnic University re-elected Scott Nicoll chair of the board of governors. Appointed to the board in April 2006, Mr. Nicoll is a partner with the firm of Hamilton Duncan Armstrong & Stewart, LLP. His new term runs until July 31, 2012.

David Naylor

The University of Toronto has extended the term of President David Naylor to June 30, 2013. Dr. Naylor became University of Toronto’s 15th president in April 2005. Prior to that, he was dean of the university’s faculty of medicine and vice-provost in charge of relations with healthcare institutions.

Jean-Marc Mangin

The Canadian Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences appointed Jean-Marc Mangin executive director, effective March 8. Mr. Mangin is the former executive director of the Global Campaign for Climate Action. He has also held positions in the Canadian government and United Nations.

Lesley Brown

The University of Lethbridge appointed Lesley Brown assistant vice-president, research. Dr. Brown started her term on Jan. 1. A professor of kinesiology, Dr. Brown joined U of Lethbridge in 1997. She has served on both the university’s general faculties council and senate.

John J. MacDonald

John J. MacDonald was appointed director of the department of athletics and recreational services at Dalhousie University in early January. Since 2004, Mr. McDonald has served as director, external relations, in Dalhousie’s faculty of management. Prior to that, he spent four years as a development officer with the university.

Ian Brindle

Ian Brindle is the new vice-president, research, at Brock University. He was appointed in mid-February. In taking up the new post, Dr. Brindle left his position as dean of the faculty of mathematics and science at Brock, a position he’d held since 2001. He also served as associate interim vice-president for research since 2008.

Brian J.R. Stevenson

Brian J.R. Stevenson, current provost and vice-president, academic, at the University of Winnipeg, will become Lakehead University’s next president and vice-chancellor on Aug. 1. Prior to his time at U of Winnipeg, Dr. Stevenson was vice-provost and associate vice-president, international, at the University of Alberta. Between 1996 and 1999, he was senior policy advisor to then Foreign Affairs Minister Lloyd Axworthy. He received his PhD in political studies from Queen’s University.

Andrew Petter

Andrew Petter, past dean of the University of Victoria faculty of law and former British Columbia attorney general, was named president and vice-chancellor of Simon Fraser University. He takes up his new post Sept. 1. Professor Petter, who said he considers himself foremost an academic, told the Times-Colonist newspaper his detour into politics was never meant to be permanent. “I saw it as a form of public service.” Professor Petter spent 10 years as an MLA, from 1991 to 2000, and served in several key cabinet posts in the NDP government, including minister of aboriginal affairs, minister of health, minister of advanced education and attorney general. As UVic’s dean of law from 2002 to 2008, Professor Petter oversaw the establishment of a new graduate law program and undertook several aboriginal initiatives such as the creation of a National Aboriginal Economic Development Chair and the development of the Akitsiraq Law School in Nunavut.

Vladimir Hachinski

Vladimir Hachinski was appointed president of the World Federation of Neurology at the group’s annual congress in Bangkok in October. He is the first Canadian to hold the post. An international expert on stroke prevention, Dr. Hachinski is a neurology professor at the University of Western Ontario, a researcher for the Canadian Stroke Network and editor-in-chief of the journal Stroke. He is credited with devising the Ischemic Score for dementia and also helped develop the Canadian Neurological Scale to assess and monitor stroke patients. His four-year term began Jan. 1.

Tom Harris

Tom Harris was appointed head of advancement at Queen’s University. His five-year term began on Jan. 4. Dr. Harris is a former dean of applied science at Queen’s and is a longtime faculty member in the department of chemical engineering.

Stuart H. (Kip) Cobbett

McGill University appointed Stuart H. (Kip) Cobbett chair of the board of governors, effective Jan. 1. Mr. Cobbett is a former managing partner and chief operating officer at the Canadian law firm Stikeman Elliott LLP. He has also served as president of the McGill Alumni Association.

Roger Couture

Roger Couture was appointed dean of the faculty of professional schools at Laurentian University, effective Jan. 1 for a period of five and a half years. He is a professor in the school of human kinetics at Laurentian and has been director of the school since 2006.

Robert Montgomery

The Ontario College of Art & Design appointed Robert Montgomery chair of its board of governors. Mr. Montgomery is an investor, advisor and entrepreneur in the digital media and information technology industries. He is the owner of Achilles Media in Toronto.

Robert Kerr

Laurentian University appointed Robert Kerr vice-president, academic and provost, starting Feb. 1. Dr. Kerr comes to Laurentian from the University of Manitoba, where he just completed two terms as vice-president, academic and provost. Prior to that, he served as dean of the faculty of applied health sciences at Brock University.

Patrice Sawyer

Patrice Sawyer was named Laurentian University’s vice-president, research and graduate studies, in December. He was appointed acting vice-president in 2008, first for francophone affairs and academic staff relations, and then for research and graduate studies. Previously, Dr. Sawyer served as chair of the department of mathematics and computer science and dean of science and engineering.

Michael J. Mahon

The new president of the University of Lethbridge is Michael J. Mahon, effective July 1. He comes to Lethbridge from the University of Alberta, where he is finishing his second term as dean of the faculty of physical education and recreation. Prior to that, Dr. Mahon was at the University of Manitoba, where he served as director of the Health, Leisure and Human Performance Research Institute and associate dean for research and graduate programs.

Lesley Cooper

Lesley Cooper was appointed acting principal/vice-president of Wilfrid Laurier University’s Brantford campus, effective Jan. 1 to July 2013. Dr. Cooper is the current dean of Laurier’s Lyle S. Hallman Faculty of Social Work, a position she has held since July 2006. Prior to joining Laurier, Dr. Cooper was head of the school of social administration and social work at Flinders University in Adelaide, Australia.

Kevin Goldthorp

The University of Western Ontario appointed Kevin Goldthorp vice-president, external, starting in April. Mr. Goldthorp held several positions at Western between 1997 and 2004, including campaign director, director of development and associate vice-president, development. He left Western in 2004 to serve as chief executive officer at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre Foundation in Toronto.

James Patten

James Patten was appointed director and chief curator of the University of Western Ontario’s McIntosh Gallery, effective Feb. 1. Previously, Mr. Patten was chief curator at the Art Gallery of Windsor. He also served as an adjunct professor in the school of visual arts at the University of Windsor.

Ira Jacobs

The University of Toronto appointed Ira Jacobs dean of the faculty of physical education and health. Previously, Dr. Jacobs was chair of York University’s school of kinesiology and health science. He also held the position of president of the Canadian Council of University Physical Education and Kinesiology Administrators.

Helene Cummins

Helene Cummins was appointed associate academic dean, student affairs, at Brescia University College in October. Brescia is an affiliate of the University of Western Ontario. Prior to joining Brescia in 1993, Dr. Cummins taught at Wilfrid Laurier University.

Harvey Secter

The University of Manitoba appointed Harvey Secter chancellor of the university, effective Jan. 1. Mr. Secter, an alumnus, had a successful retail business career before returning to school and graduating from U of M’s faculty of law in 1992. He served as the university’s dean of law from 1999 to 2008. He retired in 2008 but continued his practice in mediation and arbitration.

Douglas Freeman

The University of Saskatchewan appointed Douglas Freeman dean of the Western College of Veterinary Medicine. Dr. Freeman starts his term on March 1. Previously, he was a professor and head of two departments at North Dakota State University: veterinary diagnostic services and veterinary and microbiological sciences.

Dennis Cochrane

Dennis Cochrane was appointed president and vice-chancellor (interim) of St. Thomas University, effective Jan. 1 until July 2011. Mr. Cochrane was mayor of Moncton from 1979-1983 and a Member of Parliament from 1984-1988. He also served as a New Brunswick deputy minister of education and school board superintendent.

Bryan Hillis

Starting July 1, Bryan Hillis will be the new president of Luther College, a federated college at the University of Regina. Dr. Hillis is a professor of religious studies at the college.

Brian Rosborough

Wilfrid Laurier University appointed Brian Rosborough director of government relations. Mr. Rosborough worked in public policy and government relations in Ontario for nearly 20 years. Most recently, he was director of policy and government relations for the Association of Municipalities of Ontario.

Bonnie M. Patterson

Bonnie M. Patterson was appointed president and CEO of the Council of Ontario Universities. She had been serving as interim president since September 2009. Prof. Patterson previously headed COU from 1995 to 1998 before becoming president and vice-chancellor of Trent University, a position she held for 11 years.
