Position summary
The Diagnostic Services Unit (DSU) in the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Calgary invites applications for 2, full-time, limited term (3 years) academic positions in the area of anatomic pathology. The successful candidates will be appointed at the rank of Assistant Professor (Teaching). The anticipated start date is February 1, 2025 or a mutually agreed upon date.
UCVM's DSU is a fee-for-service veterinary diagnostic lab with fully equipped anatomic pathology services, bacteriology, serology and parasitology labs and a PCR lab coming onboard in early 2025. The service sees approximately 3000 cases per year including a wide range of species.
Position description and associated responsibilities
The position will have 80% of its time focused on diagnostics, 10% on teaching and 10% dedicated to service. This position will be located at the Clinical Skills Building (CSB) at the Spy Hill Campus. The successful candidates will work closely with the Director, Diagnostic Services Unit (DSU), the DSU Manager, and professional and technical staff to deliver expanded anatomic pathology services in Alberta while also providing service to the broader veterinary community and contributing to the enhancement of teaching and research in the faculty. The successful candidates will contribute to the anatomic pathology service which includes postmortem examinations, examination of tissues from field postmortems, and surgical pathology from a variety of species. The lab also expects to develop a telepathology service supporting rural Alberta.
Teaching will include clinical, didactic, and laboratory teaching of undergraduate students. Developing a residency program is a goal and with that, training of residents would also be expected.
Position requirements, qualifications, skills and achievements required for the appointment
Qualifications include a DVM (or equivalent) and advanced clinical training in veterinary anatomic pathology, with board certification or eligibility in the American College of Veterinary Pathologists (ACVP) or the European College of Veterinary Pathologists (ECVP). Previous diagnostic experience and a graduate degree are considered assets. Applicants must be licensed or eligible for immediate licensure in the Province of Alberta.
Appointment to the rank of Assistant Professor (Teaching) normally requires evidence or promise of teaching effectiveness or competency in teaching and learning, an awareness of how to apply scholarly approaches to teaching and learning practices, participation in reflective practice, and professional learning activities related to teaching and learning. Commitment to, or experience with, defining learning goals, supporting student learning activities and engagement, and creating assessment strategies may also be required. Engagement in the research and scholarship required to maintain currency in pedagogy and curriculum design of the relevant discipline or field as well as engaging in other scholarly professional or creative activities that strengthens and informs the academic staff member’s knowledge base and expertise is required.

UCVM's Diagnostic Services Unit (DSU) is the faculty's fee-for-service veterinary diagnostic lab. The lab is located at the Spy Hill Campus and offers anatomic pathology, bacteriology, serology, and veterinary outbreak investigation services to the veterinary community, UCVM students and researchers. The team is composed of a diverse and close-knit group of veterinary and technical experts. The DSU is in a phase of rapid growth and aims to open molecular diagnostic and parasitology services to become a comprehensive veterinary laboratory within the next year. Currently the lab sees approximately 2800 cases a year from a wide variety of domestic and wildlife species. Continued growth in the caseload is anticipated.
